O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth! Psalm 8:9
The words were written as clear as could be. No punches pulled, no innuendo. With concerted effort and careful consideration M-A-R-R-Y M-E was spelled out in the sand.
Since we happened upon it accidentally we got to fill in all the blanks.
“Maybe they rented this exclusive house on the beach just for this moment and spent the night after the proposal”.
“Or, they used the public beach access and that’s how they got out here.”
“I know! If they could afford this house, they probably had their personal assistants come and do it for them.”
“Nah, that wouldn’t fun. You’d have to do it yourself, don’t ya think? Getting it just right and filling in all the letters perfectly.”
Quietly, our imaginations retreated to their neutral corners we watched the shoreline. Conjuring up a young man on his knees with bags of blue chips, searching the weather report for days to assure windless conditions. Checking his pocket constantly to make sure the ring was still there.
Rehearsing the brief but romantic speech, concocting the excuse to come up onto the beach. The bended knee, the resounding yes, the warm kiss.
The water was so still that if it weren’t for the cold it would be a perfect day for a swim. The waves gently hugged the shore, the foam instantly vanishing into the sand. The sun hung lightly in the sky beaming warmth as we spun slowly away on our own axis. A glorious day.
And it occurred to me this beautiful day is a proposal. Every day is a proposal.
God made this beautiful day as a proposal to his bethrothed. For Us. As if he were down on one majestic knee, holding forth this gift of a day, and saying “Here. I offer you this gift. Will you accept it?”
How deeply you must love us, that you made this beautiful creation for us to admire. We are so encouraged by your gifts, help us to not take it for granted. To be profoundly thankful for it, and more importantly to do our utmost with each moment.
You gave us life, twice. Our breath from our mother’s womb and our spiritual life which your very own Son died to give us. What wonders your offer, what promise you hold for us.
Yes! We Accept your proposal! A million times YES!
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him. Psalm 8:3-4
