And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you. to know what was in your heart whether you would keep His commandments or not.
So he humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord. Deuteronomy 8:2-3
Humble. To be brought down from a lofty knowing into a place of need so wrenching that you can only look up. Humbled, on your knees, knowing you don’t deserve what you asked for and that is why you haven’t received it.
Where can you go from this place of humbleness? No where. Not with out God’s infinite grace and mercy. Recognizing this is a huge first step of an important journey.
Not getting you way, and then jumping back into God’s Word instead of running from it, is a rather large step of the journey.
It’s funny how the major flaws we flaunt, the ones we can not see at all are the very sticking points that will bring us down.
For instance: The need to always be right. That’s a biggie. People who think they are always right and will never admit they are wrong are the ones that are constantly viewed as wrong all the time, to their own chagrin. Buzzing about twisting words to fit their reality. But the need to always being right leaves them on atop dangerous precipice of a long long fall down into humility.
The folks who always have to have the last word, can never ever let it go, those are the ones whose ultimate lasting barbs wind up on the front page of the newspapers. Splashed about on the internet for all to peruse. Petty and unwise, their words are like daggers which they eventually fall upon and garrote themselves with.
What about those of us who believe if they think it really-really hard that it will happen their way? If they do all the right things, show up, put up, shut up, and pretend really really hard, then all of their prayers will come true? For those, we find a enormous helping of humble pie and a one tined fork for them to choke it down with.
God has determined our path. He has determined our faith. He will bring us to our knees with want, He will answer our cries. With His mighty fist or not at all. We will understand sooner or later that He is in charge. When we stumble and scrape our egos it’s always for our own good.
We must always look to Him, no matter what we face. No matter what calamity we face or if we are as wrong as wrong could possibly be, or our prayers have not been answered but dashed against an unassuming brick wall.
You are our sovereign mighty Father. Help us to know how to be humble in all things and not wait for you to do it for us. Let us be”slow to anger, slow to speak and quick to hear” as it says in your Word.
Help us to turn to you no matter how disgruntled we become, you are our salvation King Jesus.
