Direct My Steps

Proverbs 16:9

A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.

Some days I need to conserve my energy; and as I go about my tasks my wee little mind is always planning. “Okay, if I am going down stairs with this laundry, I should bring these empty coffee cups to the dishwasher, this junk to the garbage, this is a dish towel it belongs in the kitchen……” While these thoughts are formulated with only a vague awareness, I am very conscious of pacing myself.

On the other extreme sometimes while gardening I find I am constantly making trips to the compost pile with bucket loads of trimmings and leaves instead of having one central wheel barrow to make one large trip. I quickly over do it and run out of steam having to cut short my garden foray. Micro-managing my every move to avoid cascading affects of chronic illness.

But I love to think about how, overall, the exact place I am in now, with all the diverse people in my life, that God ordered my steps. In an ever changing creation there is order with God. He sees our plans, and modifies them according to His plan. He allows us choices and actions, and decisively sets up encounters and situations for our good.

Our lives are like a breathing shimmering tapestry. Each of us are the warp and the weft in this tapestry. The threads are woven together to create structure and strength. The horizontal threads are the weft. The weft is woven in and through the warp. Our lives are interwoven, spun together with the Holy Spirit joining the seams.

I imagine layers of this beautiful tapestry interlaced with the people who have gone before us; who helped bring us to the Lord-influencing our lives for God’s purpose, and those we will soon meet and tell of God’s divine love.

It’s very comforting to me to know that God is always near, and very involved in directing my life. I am aware as situations unfold that I am to learn and grow from each situation. I couldn’t imagine thinking that everything that takes place is just part of a whirling chaos of accident and chance.

If you are not sure why you are where you are, why not ask God? Out loud. Just ask Him to show you.

Father God,

Thank you that you hear our prayers Lord. If anyone should ask of you Lord, please show them kindly why they are where they are, and where they are headed. You Lord are sovereign, and we are thankful for your guidance and direction.

In Jesus’ precious name.
